One of the more common things my colleagues and I hear is that I am working 80 hours rather than 40 hours. How many of us received an e-mail at 10:30 p.m. and answered it before bed? We all know what happened next — you got a reply at 10:45 p.m.
It’s not a good thing for you, but it’s a great thing for the corporation. From their perspective, they are increasing the productivity of their employees by having them work twice as hard, which gives the shareholders more value.
Can anyone ever say they received more money for answering that e-mail at 10:30 p.m.? People are likely doing this so they will not get fired. Yes, you might get a bigger bonus, but that’s not likely to allow you to spend more time with your family.
Working like a maniac is unnecessary to achieve the lifestyle, wealth, and equity you deserve. That stupid report you spent your evening doing rather than seeing your kids play baseball did not provide much value to you.
If you own a business, you can make decisions that benefit you, not Wall Street, your boss, or private equity. You can control your destiny instead of having it yanked out by someone trying to reduce costs.
Isn’t owning a business risky — so when did corporate America become safe?
