Starting a Business is Risky, and Besides, My Company Loves Me

There are very few things in this world that can be guaranteed.

The two things that typically come up are death and taxes. Almost daily, I speak with people who thought their position was safe, secure, and essential to the company’s existence –until their email stopped working, and most never saw it coming.

There is a sound foundation for this misconception.

People do not assess risk rationally because we are hardwired that way. Long ago, avoiding an area where lions might hide was a good idea because a mistake could make you lunch. Another great example is the fellow who is terrified about getting on an airplane, but on the way to the airport, he smokes a cigarette and drives without a seatbelt at 90 miles an hour. The risk is not the airplane. See what the Harvard Business Review has to say about Risk.

Just because there is a predisposition to accentuate risk doesn’t mean it has to be that way.

As part of my practice, I give people a rational understanding of the risks and benefits of business ownership to make decisions based on reality rather than on emotional responses. This is about controlling your income, lifestyle, wealth, and equity for yourself rather than your boss.

What about the reward?

Mostly, no one gets a nickel more by working 80 rather than 40 hours. You might get a nice pat on the back and a bigger bonus, but who gets the value for those additional 40 hours? It’s certainly not your family and it doesn’t do much for your health, but somehow, we do it daily. Remember what Einstein said about asking the same question repeatedly and expecting a different answer.
