The Great Resignation — Going From the Frying Pan into the Fire?

There’s been much discussion about people leaving their existing company and moving elsewhere. We should not be surprised because the corporate environment has become increasingly toxic over the past few decades.

The reality is companies have only one obligation – to make money.

Consider this:

In a world of “at-will employment,” the company has the right to fire you for any reason. They can then hire somebody else (cheaper), but you cannot pay your mortgage.

Binding healthcare to your job puts you in a position where you have no health care if you leave or get fired.

Pensions, once the mainstay of people’s retirements, have disappeared.

Mergers and acquisitions have reduced your options. My experience is things don’t get better; they get worse.

If Private Equity acquires the company you work for or goes public, remember their loyalty is to the new owners, and their goal is to extract value from the company. There is no obligation to you, the company, or the customers.

I always wonder why people believe working for a large company is safe and owning a business is risky.

This may have been true once, but it’s certainly not true today. Remember that risk is relative, and perception is reality. I speak with people daily who say,” I want to get a job, and that will fix everything.” It isn’t easy to let them know the chances are not what they think. One way to avoid this issue is by owning your own business, where you get to make the rules.

Thankfully, owning a business is far easier and safer than most people realize.
