Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help When Making Drastic Changes

Listening to my clients is one of the more critical skills I’ve learned. Often, the comments they make are profound.

A critical factor for success is someone’s ability to accept and embrace change. Understanding that change is something new, I help my clients through a discovery process. This discovery is universal and obvious but very distinct from straightforward or quick. That is especially true since most people I’m working with are mid-career or close to it, and change is hard. In addition, most people who become self-sufficient business owners choose something vastly different from what they were doing before. The Entrepreneur’s Source keeps careful records on this. There are a few takeaways from this.

To become successful business owners, people need to be willing to accept this change and understand that a coach can dramatically improve the probability of success.

Another critical factor is their openness to constructive criticism and education.

The system developed in the 1980s by Terry Powell is fundamentally coaching. That is similar to coaching someone who wants to play a particular sport. The player on the field needs a third-party, impartial individual to let them know what they’re doing right or wrong. Have you ever seen a successful professional sports player without a coach?

Buy a business only if you fully understand your goals, needs, and expectations. Like anything else you buy, it must return value based on your specific income, lifestyle wealth, and equity requirements. Anything else will likely be a mistake.
